Governor of Borno State, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has inaugurated the newly constituted Governing Council of Kashim Ibrahim University, charging its members with spearheading innovative research, academic excellence, and community development to support the state’s post-insurgency recovery.

The formal inauguration, held at the Government House in Maiduguri, saw the swearing-in of Dr. Muhammadu Indimi as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, alongside other distinguished council members.

Describing the university as a “critical institution in rebuilding the region,” Governor Zulum underscored the role of higher education in addressing the socio-economic disruptions caused by over a decade of insurgency in Nigeria’s North-East.

“The challenges before you are as significant as the opportunities,” the governor said. “We task you with fostering a culture of rigorous research, innovative teaching, and community-relevant curricula that directly respond to our post-insurgency recovery and development needs.”

Zulum noted the university’s growth trajectory since its inception, with student enrollment rising from just 300 to nearly 10,000 in six years. He called on the newly inaugurated council to uphold high standards of academic integrity, ensure transparency, and manage resources efficiently while prioritizing staff and student welfare.

“You are now the legal custodians of this university’s destiny,” Zulum declared. “Your mandate includes providing strategic direction, ensuring financial prudence, and safeguarding academic excellence.”

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to educational reform, Zulum cited key achievements, including the construction of 139 new mega schools, rehabilitation of existing educational infrastructure, mass teacher recruitment, and the establishment of six centers of excellence.

He also referenced the university’s enabling law, which vests the council with the authority to oversee policy, finances, and institutional administration.

Congratulating the council members, Zulum praised their credentials and dedication to public service. He singled out Dr. Indimi for special recognition, lauding his philanthropic legacy and longstanding support for education.

“Your selection was not by chance,” Zulum said. “It was based on proven integrity, experience, and passion. In particular, I commend our Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Muhammadu Indimi, whose legendary philanthropy and unwavering support for education are widely acknowledged.”

In his remarks, Dr. Indimi expressed gratitude for the appointment and pledged to contribute meaningfully to the university’s development.

“I accepted this position because I have to support my state,” he said. “With my able lieutenants, we promise to bring positive change to the university.”

The inauguration marks a significant milestone in Borno State’s efforts to rebuild and revitalize its tertiary education sector as part of broader post-insurgency recovery strategies.
