The Zamfara State Ministry of Health has responded to the recent announcement by the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) regarding a proposed seven-day warning strike, urging the union to reconsider its decision in the interest of public health.
In an official statement issued by the Ministry’s Information Officer, Suleiman Isah, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nafisa Muhammed Maradun, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to the welfare of all health workers under the administration of Governor Dauda Lawal.
Dr. Maradun emphasized that the government has taken concrete steps to improve health workers’ conditions, including a recent salary increase aimed at motivating and retaining healthcare professionals.
She noted that this increment is part of a phased plan to address remuneration challenges across the board.
“The claim that the Ministry is being selective and biased is unfounded,” the statement read. “We have consistently engaged with various health unions and stakeholders to design a comprehensive and equitable solution.”
The Commissioner expressed concern over the timing of the proposed strike, pointing to the ongoing cholera outbreak affecting several communities in the state.
“At a time when our focus should be on curbing the spread of cholera, it is disheartening that the union has opted for industrial action,” she said, adding that the health and safety of Zamfara citizens remain the government’s top priority.
In response to the outbreak, the state government, according to the.commissioner, medical consumables and drugs has distributed to affected local government areas.
Stating that It has also intensified efforts in water, sanitation, and hygiene services and continues to provide free treatment at the infectious disease hospital, which is fully staffed with qualified medical personnel.
The Ministry called on the union to return to the negotiation table, stressing that dialogue remains the most effective path forward.
“Our doors remain open for constructive engagement. We are committed to resolving all outstanding issues amicably to ensure uninterrupted healthcare delivery across Zamfara State,” the statement concluded.
