In a landmark move towards restoring peace in Taraba State, the Tiv and Fulani communities in Gassol Local Government Area have signed a formal peace accord, bringing an end to years of violent clashes and strained relations.
The historic agreement was reached during a high- evel meeting held at the 6 Brigade Headquarters Conference Room in Jalingo.
The peace session was convened and facilitated by the Commander of 6 Brigade Nigerian Army and Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS), Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa.
Describing the peace pact as a “significant milestone,” Brigadier General Uwa said the accord aligns with the Brigade’s non-kinetic conflict resolution strategy, which prioritizes dialogue, reconciliation, and community-driven solutions over military force.
“This initiative is not just about stopping violence; it’s about restoring trust, promoting peaceful coexistence, and creating an environment where communities can thrive,” Uwa stated.
The peace accord follows years of communal tensions and violent confrontations between Tiv and Fulani groups in Gassol. In a bid to halt the bloodshed and promote harmony, the Army invited key stakeholders including Gassol Local Government Chairman Abubakar Usman, traditional rulers, community leaders, and security agencies for dialogue.
Brigadier General Uwa condemned the cycle of violence, cautioning against vigilantism and calling for all parties to uphold the rule of law. He emphasized that true development is only possible when peace, security, and mutual respect are sustained.
The Army Commander also commended Chairman Abubakar Usman for his leadership and active role in brokering peace between the communities, describing him as a key figure in advancing reconciliation efforts.
During the meeting, representatives of both the Tiv and Fulani communities made solemn pledges to renounce violence, reject the shielding of criminal elements, and commit to ongoing dialogue and cooperation. They also vowed to support security agencies through intelligence sharing and peaceful engagement.
In his remarks, Chairman Usman expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army, particularly the troops of 6 Brigade, for their unwavering efforts in restoring peace to the region. He noted that the peace agreement marks a new beginning for the people of Gassol.
“This accord is a timely and necessary step. It provides a foundation for healing, rebuilding trust, and ensuring the safety and progress of all our people,” Usman said.
The meeting concluded with the official signing of the peace agreement, with both communities reaffirming their commitment to full implementation of the resolutions and continued collaboration with security and government authorities to ensure lasting peace in Gassol.
