Thousands of teachers across Kenya will begin earning higher salaries from July 1 after the government allocated KSh8.4 billion to enhance teachers’ remuneration, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has confirmed.
Speaking on Friday during the closing ceremony of the 49th Kenya Secondary School Heads Association (KESSHA) Annual National Conference in Mombasa, TSC Chairperson Jamleck Muturi said the commission is fully prepared to implement the salary increment without delay.
“We have been allocated KSh8.4 billion for increasing teachers’ salaries from July this year. That money has been allocated, and we will ensure that it is paid,” Muturi said.
The TSC chair also announced that the commission will soon advertise the promotion of more than 30,000 teachers after receiving KSh2 billion from the National Treasury to facilitate the exercise.
In addition, Muturi revealed that the government has secured funding to employ 24,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers on permanent and pensionable terms, a move expected to strengthen staffing in the country’s education sector.
He said the initiatives are part of broader efforts to improve teachers’ welfare, enhance career progression, and address staffing challenges in schools.
The latest announcements are expected to boost morale among teachers, many of whom have long called for better pay, promotion opportunities, and improved job security.
