The North East Development Commission (NEDC) has provided relief support to more than 3,000 individuals affected by floods and communal conflicts across Yobe State, delivering large quantities of building materials and critical emergency response equipment to aid recovery and disaster preparedness.
At a formal handover ceremony held in Damaturu on Tuesday, the Commission presented assorted construction materials to help rebuild homes destroyed by recent natural and man-made disasters.
The items include 20,000 pieces each of timber and ceiling boards, 6,000 rods each of 10mm and 12mm iron bars, 3,000 bundles of zinc sheets, and 2,000 cartons of roofing nails.
In a parallel move to enhance emergency response efforts, the NEDC also donated advanced search and rescue equipment to the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA).
The donated items include 150 rain boots, 150 life jackets, 1,000 pulley ropes and hooks, 1,000 demarcation cables and wires, 10 sets of boat safety equipment, and 15 complete sets of search and rescue kits.
Speaking NEDC Managing Director/CEO Mohammed Goni Alkali, represented by the Yobe State Coordinator Professor Ali Ibrahim Abbas, stated that the intervention is part of the Commission’s broader strategy to support state-level humanitarian efforts and enhance regional resilience.
“This support goes beyond relief,” Abbas said. “It is a strategic contribution to sustainable recovery efforts in Yobe State and aligns with Governor Mai Mala Buni’s vision of a more resilient and secure environment for residents.”
Yobe State’s Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Dr.Mairo Ahmed Amshi, expressed appreciation to the NEDC on behalf of the state government. She described the donation as timely and assured that the materials would be distributed to communities most in need.
“We are grateful to the NEDC for standing with Yobe during this challenging period,” Amshi said. “These materials will be used judiciously to restore dignity to affected households.”
Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of SEMA, Dr. Mohammed Gone, noted that the new equipment would significantly enhance the agency’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies across the state.
“The impact of this intervention on our operational readiness cannot be overstated,” Goje said. “We now have the tools to better protect lives and property during crises.”
To ensure transparency and accountability, the distribution of relief materials will be coordinated through local committees established in each benefiting local government council.
These committees, as gathered by WorldClass247News, comprise local government Chairmen, community leaders, Community Development Officers (CDOs), NEDC representatives, and officials from the Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (YOSEMA).
This intervention further reinforces the NEDC’s role not just as a development agency but as a crucial partner in humanitarian and disaster response efforts in the North East.
As communities in Yobe continue to recover from hardship, the Commission’s support is seen as a lifeline for thousands rebuilding their lives.
