The Kano State Police Command has reassured residents of the state that the security situation remains calm and under control, despite recent attempts to incite public unrest through the spread of fake news on social media.
In a statement released on Saturday, the Police debunked a viral false report claiming that an 18-seater bus transporting Igbo passengers was set ablaze, and another alleging that an Igbo man was killed in a reprisal attack in the state.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, both claims have been thoroughly investigated and found to be baseless and malicious.
“These fabricated stories, which were swiftly refuted by community stakeholders, caused unnecessary panic and fear among residents,” the statement read.
The Command praised the collaborative efforts of the Kano State Government, community leaders, and law-abiding citizens in maintaining peace and swiftly countering misinformation.
It emphasized that security measures have been strengthened across the state and encouraged the public to continue their daily activities without fear.
While commending the public’s cooperation, the Police warned against the spread of fake news, hate speech, and inciting content that could lead to public disorder.
The Command urged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the authorities via the following hotlines: 08032419754, 08123821575, or 09029292926.
