Enugu State has launched its own airline, Enugu Air, in what Governor Peter Mbah described as a transformative milestone for the state and a model for public-private partnerships.
The inaugural flight of the state-owned carrier took off on Monday, marking what the governor hailed as a historic moment for the people of Enugu.
Speaking at the launch ceremony, Governor Mbah said the airline was a crucial step toward realising his administration’s vision of positioning Enugu as a leading hub for investment, tourism, and quality living in Nigeria.
“It is an honour to stand before you today, not only as a governor but as a fellow believer in the power of vision,” Mbah declared. “Enugu Air symbolises more than just an airline it represents our determination to create the right environment for enterprise and open new economic frontiers.”
He described the airline as a “fitting gift” to the people of Enugu, coming shortly after his administration marked its second year in office.
“Among the key objectives we outlined upon assuming office was the pledge to make Enugu the premier destination for investments, living, and tourism in Nigeria. Today, we are witnessing a clear pathway to that goal,” Mbah said.
The governor emphasised that Enugu Air’s establishment reflects the potential of strategic public-private collaborations to unlock economic opportunities and enhance connectivity.
“With our airline, we are opening doors to a sector that once felt out of reach. Enugu Air has given more wings to our dreams, and today we take that first flight together,” he added.
Also speaking at the event, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, addressed concerns about the future of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, clarifying that the facility is not being sold but concession to private investors.
“I have seen some comments saying, ‘No, we are selling Enugu airport out.’ We are concessioning it. The process is supported by Mr. President, by FAAN, by the Ministry of Aviation, and by the National Assembly committees,” Keyamo explained.
According to him, the concession will pave the way for significant upgrades, including a cargo terminal that is expected to stimulate economic activities and job creation in the region.
“You can now process exports directly from Enugu here the cargo terminal for the good and employment of Enugu people. I thought it was necessary to mention it here today,” the minister said.
He commended Governor Mbah for his proactive approach to attracting private sector investment, noting that the governor chose not to wait for bureaucratic delays before driving progress in the aviation sector.
