Severe flooding triggered by heavy rainfall on Sunday has displaced several residents and inundated homes across parts of Yola, the Adamawa State capital.
The most affected communities include Shagari Lowcost, Sabon Pegi, and Modire Yolde Pate, where floodwaters destroyed property, rendered roads impassable, and brought daily activities to a halt.
Eyewitnesses described the torrential downpour—which lasted several hours—as one of the heaviest the city has experienced in recent years. Residents in low-lying areas were forced to flee their homes as floodwaters surged through streets and compounds.
“We need urgent help. The water has taken over our homes and we don’t know where to go,” lamented a resident of Shagari Lowcost, calling for immediate intervention by government agencies.
While no official casualties had been confirmed at the time of filing this report, the scale of the flooding has raised concerns about the capacity of the city’s drainage system and the preparedness of relevant authorities to handle such disasters during the rainy season.
In a swift response, the Adamawa State Police Command deployed trained marine officers and engine boats to assist residents trapped by the rising waters. The operation is being carried out in collaboration with the 23 Brigade of the Nigerian Army.
According to the Police Command, the emergency team has been mobilized to deliver aid, evacuate victims, and maintain order in the affected areas.
“We are working closely with the military and community leaders to reach those in distress and prevent further harm,” a spokesperson for the command stated, assuring residents that rescue efforts would continue.
