The Borno State Executive Council has approved the renaming of Borno State University to Kashim Ibrahim University in honor of the first Governor of northern Nigeria.
The development was said to have been part of resolutions reached during the Council’s first meeting of 2025, chaired by Governor Babagana Umara Zulum.
The meeting, held at the Government House in Maiduguri, lasted over six hours, during which key issues affecting the state were discussed. .
Addressing journalists, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Professor Usman Tar, announced the renaming and outlined the steps required for its implementation.
“Council approved that Borno State University shall be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. This is subject to further legislative work by the State Assembly to amend the law establishing the university.
The Ministry of Education will also inform relevant regulatory bodies like the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), among others,” Professor Tar stated.
Additionally, the Council also approved a comprehensive street naming and house numbering initiative for Maiduguri and other urban centers as part of the state’s urban renewal drive.
The move, according to the commissioner, aims to enhance urban planning and governance in line with Governor Zulum’s development agenda.
“Maiduguri is rapidly developing, with numerous new buildings, public roads, and facilities. Relevant MDAs will collaborate with agencies such as the Nigerian Postal Service, Nigerian Geological Survey, and community leaders to create a naming template,” Professor Tar added.
The initiative, as made known by him, will ensure updated names are reflected on platforms like Google Maps, public directories, and official records to aid effective development planning.
Governor Zulum, while addressing Council members, was said to lauded their efforts in 2024 and urged them to scale up recovery and developmental projects in 2025.
“In 2024, my administration achieved significant progress in implementing government programs and projects, and I am committed to doing even more this year,” Zulum said.
