The Bauchi State Police Command has dismissed claims of inaction regarding the murder investigation of 70-year-old Mama Talatu Joshua in Gobir village, Kirfi Local Government Area, confirming that suspects have been arrested.
In a statement, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ahmed Mohammed Wakil responded to a petition from ADA-LIGHT KWALTINGS, SAMUEL & PARTNERS, which accused officers at the Kirfi Division of failing to apprehend the suspects and mishandling the victim’s body.
“We received a petition concerning the murder of Mama Talatu Joshua,” Wakil stated. “The petition alleged inaction on our part, and we are here to set the record straight.”
According to the police, the fatal attack occurred on March 2, 2025, when four individuals—Rilwanu Mani (Chiroman Gobir), Ali Isah (Sarkin Gobir), Ila Amo (Marafan Gobir), and Jamilu—assaulted Mama Talatu, leading to her death.
The petition further alleged that officers confirmed her death but failed to take appropriate action. However, CSP Wakil clarified that law enforcement personnel are not authorized to officially determine deaths, as that responsibility lies with medical professionals.
Dismissing allegations of inaction, Wakil confirmed that the suspects were arrested on March 8, 2025, and are now in custody at the Criminal Investigation Department.
Investigations revealed that the attack stemmed from an incident on February 28, 2025, when the wife of one of the suspects sought help from a traditional healer, who allegedly blamed Talatu for her illness. This accusation led the suspects to confront and fatally assault her.
“We urge all parties involved to refrain from spreading misleading statements, as such actions could undermine the integrity of the investigation and disrupt peace in Bauchi State,” Wakil stated.
He reassured the public that the police remain committed to conducting the investigation with professionalism and objectivity.
