President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed into law two bills establishing new federal universities in Osun and Ekiti states.
The newly approved institutions are the Federal University of Age and Development Studies, Iragbiji, Osun state and the Federal University of Technology and Environment Science, Iyin Ekiti, Ekiti state.
Speaking on the significance of these universities, President Tinubu emphasized their role in addressing Nigeria’s educational needs while fostering research, innovation, and economic development.
He stated that the institutions will serve as training centers for professionals in agriculture, science, and technology, ultimately enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness.
According to the National Universities Commission (NUC), Nigeria currently has 63 federal universities, 63 state universities, and 149 private universities. The latest additions mark a continued expansion of the country’s higher education sector.
This development follows President Tinubu’s earlier approval, on February 3, 2025, of the Federal University of Environment and Technology (FUET) in Ogoni town, Rivers State.
Additionally, the President has authorized the Federal Government’s takeover of a forfeited private university in Southern Kaduna, converting it into a federal institution.
The new universities align with the administration’s commitment to expanding access to quality education and promoting specialized training in key sectors critical to Nigeria’s development.
