Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has explained his decision to support his Commissioner for Works, Mustapha Gubio, as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election.
Zulum endorsed Gubio after presenting him with expression of interest and nomination forms of the All Progressives Congress in Abuja, a move seen as a significant step toward shaping the state’s political succession.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Dauda Iliya, the governor said the endorsement was aimed at sustaining the developmental progress achieved under his administration.
Zulum noted that Gubio embodies qualities such as discipline, courage, and dedication to public service, adding that he has shown strong capacity in overseeing key infrastructure projects, particularly housing development across urban and rural areas.
He said these efforts have contributed to improved living conditions, especially in communities recovering from insurgency.
The governor also highlighted Gubio’s previous role as Commissioner for Reconstruction, Rehabilitation and Resettlement, where he led initiatives to rebuild conflict-affected communities and restore essential services.
According to the statement, significant reconstruction has taken place in areas including Bama, Konduga, Damasak, and Mafa, with schools, healthcare facilities, and other critical infrastructure rehabilitated.
Zulum said the achievements align with his administration’s vision of recovery, stability, and sustainable development, describing Gubio as a candidate capable of ensuring continuity.
He added that the endorsement reflects a strategic choice based on experience and competence, expressing confidence that Gubio would consolidate existing gains and further advance development efforts in the state.
The development is expected to shape political alignments within the APC in Borno State ahead of the 2027 elections.
