The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), representing 19 Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has extended warm congratulations to Muslims across Nigeria and the world on the successful completion of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr.
In a statement issued on Sunday, CAN emphasized the spiritual significance of Ramadan, acknowledging the rewards that come with devotion and adherence to religious teachings.
The association recognized the commitment of Muslims to faith and discipline during the holy period, expressing hope for continued harmony among religious groups in Nigeria.
However, the organization also used the opportunity to express deep sorrow over the brutal killing of 16 travelers in Uromi, Edo State. CAN described the incident as a tragedy and condemned the senseless violence, calling it a stain on collective humanity.
“This heinous act of violence is a tragedy that should unite us all in our outrage and determination to ensure that justice is served,” the statement read. “As Christians, we stand in solidarity with the families of the victims, recognizing that this act is not just an attack on a region but on our shared humanity.”
The religious body urged Nigerians to avoid revenge and retaliation, warning that such actions would only perpetuate a cycle of violence and suffering. Instead, CAN called for national unity and rejected divisive rhetoric that demonizes groups based on religion, ethnicity, or region.
“Evil is evil, and criminals must be treated as such without allowing them to exploit religious or ethnic identities as shields to evade justice,” CAN stated.
The association also called on security agencies, the Edo State government, and the Federal Government to conduct a thorough investigation into the killings and bring those responsible to justice. It stressed the need for immediate and transparent action to ensure accountability.
In conclusion, CAN emphasized the importance of strengthening Nigeria’s justice system to break the cycle of violence and create a safer, more just society for all citizens.
The statement, as noticed by the WorldClass247News, was jointly signed by Rev. John Joseph Hayab, Chairman of CAN 19 Northern States and FCT, and Bishop Mohammed Naga, Secretary-General of CAN 19 Northern States and FCT.
