The Yobe state government has approved the construction of four new modern markets across the state as part of its efforts to expand commercial infrastructure and stimulate economic growth.

The new markets will be sited in Bumsa, Gulani Local Government Area; Sabon Garin Nangere, Nangere Local Government Area; Girgir, Jakusko Local Government Area; and Ngelzarma, Fune Local Government Area.

The approval was announced in a public notice issued by the Yobe State Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Solid Minerals and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Alhaji Zanna Ibrahim Ali.

According to the ministry, the projects are designed to provide modern trading facilities, improve the business environment, support organized commercial activities, facilitate the movement of goods and agricultural produce, and create opportunities for investment and enterprise development.

The ministry said the latest approval is part of the state government’s ongoing investment in commercial infrastructure under the administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni.

It noted that modern markets have already been completed in Damaturu, Potiskum, Nguru, Gashua, Ngalda and Yunusari. Construction of the Geidam Modern Market has also surpassed 90 per cent completion, while work is progressing on similar projects in Machina, Buni Yadi and Yusufari.

With the approval of the four additional markets, the state government said it has now initiated a total of 14 modern and ultra-modern market projects across Yobe state.

Government officials said the projects are expected to strengthen agricultural marketing, support the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), create employment opportunities, boost internally generated revenue and attract private investment.

They added that the expansion of market infrastructure forms part of the government’s broader strategy to promote long-term economic growth and strengthen commercial activities across communities in the state.
