Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe state,has approved the implementation of the 2025 Federal Government/Academic Staff Union of Universities (FGN/ASUU) Agreement, including the payment of arrears of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).
The approval followed the submission of a report by the state Fact-Finding Committee on the review of welfare and remuneration of academic staff. The report had earlier been presented to the Acting Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Mohammed Goje.
According to a statement signed by the Director-General, Press and Media Affairs to the governor, Mamman Mohammed, the committee was mandated to visit selected state-owned universities across the country to assess welfare packages, compare remuneration structures, and recommend measures to improve conditions of service for academic staff in Yobe state.
Governor Buni directed that payment of the approved allowances should commence from August 2026, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to rewarding excellence, promoting industrial harmony, and sustaining quality higher education in the state.
The approval covers the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), Professorial Allowance, and Earned Academic Allowance (EAA), making Yobe one of the states implementing the 2025 FGN/ASUU Agreement aimed at improving staff welfare and enhancing academic excellence.
Receiving the committee’s report earlier, the Acting SSG, Dr. Mohammed Goje, commended members of the committee for carrying out the assignment with dedication and professionalism, saying their recommendations would strengthen industrial harmony between the government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The Chairman of the committee and Commissioner for Higher Education, Prof. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, disclosed that the committee visited Bauchi State University, Kaduna State University (KASU), Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano, and other institutions as part of its assignment. He was represented by Prof. Mohammed Musa Lawan.
The committee also recommended the provision of research grants, annual salary increments, improved welfare incentives, and sustained funding of tertiary institutions to boost efficiency, research, and academic excellence.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Yobe State University chapter, Muhammad Adam, commended Governor Buni for prioritising the welfare of academic staff and demonstrating commitment to quality education.
He urged members of the union to reciprocate the government’s gesture by remaining dedicated to their duties, promoting industrial harmony, and contributing to research and academic excellence.
