Nigeria, Niger Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Renewed Commitment to Joint Development

Nigeria and Niger have reaffirmed their strong diplomatic and developmental partnership with a renewed commitment to revitalizing the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC).

The pledge was made during an official working visit by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, to Niamey on April 16, 2025.

The visit, initiated by both governments, was marked by a warm reception from Niger’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and Nigeriens Abroad, His Excellency Mr. Bakary Yaou Sangaré.

The cordial engagement reflected the deep-rooted friendship and mutual respect shared by the two neighboring nations.

During the high-level meeting, both ministers held in-depth discussions on key bilateral, regional, and global issues. Central to their talks was the revitalization of the NNJC — a strategic platform designed to drive cooperation in various sectors.

Among the priorities agreed upon were the acceleration of major joint infrastructure projects, including the Kano-Katsina-Jibiya-Maradi railway, the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, the Trans-Saharan Highway, and collaborative efforts in cross-border trade, energy, information and communication technology, agriculture, education, tourism, and migration.

The leaders emphasized the need to operationalize cross-border markets and address shared challenges such as desertification, tariffs, and economic integration.

On security, both sides acknowledged the persistent threat posed by terrorism along their shared border and called for enhanced defense collaboration to secure their territories and facilitate sustainable development.

In a bid to deepen cooperation, both countries agreed to intensify collaboration across political, economic, scientific, social, and cultural domains. They also committed to more frequent engagement through regular meetings of expert committees, the Council of Ministers, and the High Authority of the NNJC.

One of the key outcomes of the visit was the agreement to establish a Joint Consultative Forum. This forum will bring together relevant stakeholders from both countries to address common challenges and identify new opportunities for growth and development.

Concluding the visit, Minister Sangaré expressed heartfelt gratitude to Ambassador Tuggar and extended appreciation on behalf of Niger’s President, government, and people.

Ambassador Tuggar, in turn, thanked the Nigerien authorities for their hospitality and extended an invitation to Minister Sangaré to visit Nigeria — an invitation that was graciously accepted.

The visit, as noticed by WorldClass247News, marks a significant step in reinforcing the longstanding ties between Nigeria and Niger and highlights a shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and prosperity.
