The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru (FUAZ) Branch, has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the university’s Governing Council and Management, demanding the immediate implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement or face industrial action.

The resolution was reached during a Special Congress held on July 28, 2026, at the University Auditorium. The meeting was attended by members of the ASUU National Visitation Team, including Comrades Lawal Argungu, Murtala Abdullahi (Kwara), Aliyu Ahmad, and the ASUU Sokoto Zone Coordinator, Comrade Abubakar Sabo.

According to the union, the ultimatum takes effect from July 29, 2026, following what it described as the university’s continued failure to implement the Federal Government’s directives on the 2025 agreement.

ASUU-FUAZ noted that the Federal Government and ASUU concluded and signed the renegotiated agreement in December 2025, ending a 16-year renegotiation process. The agreement provides for a 40 percent upward review of academic staff emoluments as well as the payment of outstanding entitlements.

The union also recalled that the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to implementing the agreement and issued the necessary circulars directing compliance.

It further stated that funds had been released to federal universities for the payment of five months’ accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) arrears.

However, the union expressed disappointment that the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru had allegedly been excluded from the implementation of the agreement, leaving its academic staff without the benefits approved for their counterparts in other federal universities.

ASUU-FUAZ described the situation as particularly troubling, noting that the institution remains the only federal university in Nigeria established and made operational without a take-off grant. Despite these challenges, the union said its members had continued to carry out their teaching, research, and community service responsibilities with dedication and professionalism while awaiting government intervention.

Following deliberations, Congress unanimously demanded the immediate implementation of the 2025 FG-ASUU Agreement at FUAZ and the payment of the five months’ accumulated CATA arrears alongside all other outstanding financial entitlements owed to its members.

The union warned that failure by the Governing Council and Management to meet the demands within the 21-day ultimatum would leave it with no option but to commence industrial action in line with its established procedures.

Speaking after the meeting, the Branch Chairperson, Comrade Danbauchi Ishaq Sanchi, called on the university’s Governing Council, Management, the Federal Government, and other relevant stakeholders to urgently intervene and resolve the matter to avert an industrial crisis.

He said prompt action was necessary to safeguard teaching, research, and learning at the Federal University of Agriculture, Zuru.
