Itsekiri youths, under the aegis of the Itsekiri Youths for Good Governance (IYGG), have called on Prince Collins Oritsetimeyin Edema to contest the Delta South Senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
The call was contained in a statement jointly signed by the Delta South Coordinator and Secretary of the group, Sam Oki Metsh and George Omatsuli, following what they described as a strategic leadership meeting.
According to the group, Edema’s leadership credentials and track record in both the private sector and community service position him as a suitable candidate to represent the senatorial district at the National Assembly.
“Delta South Senatorial District, which comprises the Itsekiri, Ijaw and Isoko ethnic nationalities, requires a representative who is not only trustworthy but also possesses the technical and diplomatic capacity to deliver results,” the statement said.
The group described Edema as a “transformational leader,” urging him to heed the call to serve, adding that his vision for inclusivity aligns with the needs of the district ahead of the 2027 elections.
IYGG members also highlighted his previous leadership roles, including his tenure as President of the National Association of Itsekiri Students (NAIS) and the National Association of Itsekiri Graduates (NAIG), as well as his position as Sole Representative of the Olu of Warri to the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.
They noted that these roles demonstrated his capacity to manage complex community relations and advocate for equitable distribution of benefits from the oil and gas sector.
A key theme of the endorsement, according to the group, is Edema’s perceived ability to unite the diverse ethnic groups within Delta South, an area known for its political complexity and competitiveness.
Political observers say the call may signal early mobilization ahead of the 2027 elections, with youth groups increasingly positioning themselves as influential stakeholders in determining electoral outcomes in Delta State.
As of the time of filing this report, Edema has yet to make a formal declaration regarding his intention to contest the senatorial seat. However, growing support from community-based organisations suggests that his potential candidacy could shape the dynamics of the race.
