As governments across Nigeria intensify efforts to address food insecurity and boost agricultural production, the Adamawa state government has taken another major step toward strengthening mechanised farming with the distribution of tractors to local government councils across the state.

However, beyond the handover ceremony, Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has made it clear that accountability and proper management will determine the success of the intervention.

Speaking during the formal handover of tractors to the 21 local government councils for the 2026 farming season at the Adamawa Agricultural Authority in Kofare, Yola North Local Government Area, Governor Fintiri warned council chairmen against the misuse or diversion of the equipment.

The governor stressed that the tractors were procured specifically to improve agricultural productivity, encourage mechanised farming, and support farmers across the state, insisting that the machines must not be converted for personal or non-agricultural use.

According to him, the initiative forms part of his administration’s broader agricultural transformation agenda aimed at strengthening food production systems, expanding cultivation, and improving rural livelihoods.

Fintiri reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the effective utilisation of government interventions targeted at achieving food security and sustainable rural development.

He also issued a stern warning that any official found guilty of diverting or misusing the tractors would face sanctions in line with government regulations.

The distribution of 42 tractors is expected to ease the burden on farmers, many of whom continue to face challenges associated with manual farming and limited access to modern agricultural equipment.

Earlier in his remarks, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Salihu Idris, described the intervention as a reflection of the governor’s commitment to agricultural transformation, youth empowerment, and rural development.

He explained that increased access to mechanised farming tools would help farmers cultivate larger portions of land while reducing production costs and labour difficulties.

Idris assured that adequate monitoring mechanisms would be put in place to ensure that the tractors are effectively utilised for the intended purpose.

Also speaking, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Yayaji Mijinyawa, commended the governor for what he described as a timely intervention capable of improving farming activities and boosting food production across the state.

The Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Adamawa State chapter, Suleiman Gankuba, described the distribution of the tractors as a demonstration of purposeful leadership focused on improving livelihoods and enhancing grassroots development.

Gankuba assured the state government that local councils would ensure the proper management and deployment of the equipment to benefit farmers in all the affected areas.

For many farmers in Adamawa state, the intervention represents renewed hope ahead of the farming season.

Speaking on behalf of farmers, the Chairman of the Farmers Association of Adamawa state, Ibrahim Usman Michika, expressed appreciation to the state government, noting that the tractors would significantly support farming activities during the current season.

Agriculture remains a major source of livelihood for thousands of residents in Adamawa State, making mechanisation and government support critical to improving food production, reducing poverty, and strengthening the rural economy.
