The Federal Government has refuted claims circulating in some media outlets that water has been released from the Lagdo Dam in Cameroon, assuring Nigerians that the dam remains at low levels.
The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engineer Joseph Terlumun Utsev, disclosed on Monday that he personally spoke with the Lagdo Dam Manager, Mr. Ahmad Bivoung, who confirmed that the dam is currently at a low level of 2.06 metres and no water has been discharged.
“The Ministry is maintaining constant communication with Cameroonian authorities, and any official release of water will be promptly communicated,” Prof. Utsev stated.
He urged the public to disregard false reports and remain calm, while continuing to observe flood safety and preparedness measures previously issued.
The Minister also advised communities in flood-prone areas, particularly Lokoja in Kogi State, Wurobokki in Adamawa State, and Makurdi in Benue State, to stay vigilant and consult the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) Flood Dashboard for reliable updates.
Highlighting ongoing flood control efforts, the Minister noted that the Federal Government remains committed to proactive reservoir operations along the Benue Trough, aimed at preventing emergency water releases.
He further revealed that the study and design of the Datsin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State have been completed, and a Transaction Adviser has been engaged to facilitate its construction through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP).
Additionally, the Kashimbila Dam in Taraba State is currently serving flood control purposes, while the upgrade of the Wannune Dam and the study and design of the Dura Dam in Benue State are at advanced stages.
The Federal Government reassured citizens of its continued efforts to mitigate flooding and improve water infrastructure nationwide.
