The Edo State Government has given former deputy governor, Godwin Omobayo, a one-week ultimatum to return all government assets reportedly still in his possession.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, Mr. Fred Itua, the government expressed concern that several official items, including vehicles, documents, and other state-owned assets assigned to Mr. Omobayo during his “brief and illegitimate tenure,” have not been returned despite multiple reminders.
The statement reiterated that all property and assets acquired or used in the course of public service remain the property of the state and must be surrendered upon leaving office. Retaining such assets, it added, constitutes a breach of public trust and an unlawful act.
Mr. Omobayo has been given seven days from the date of the release to comply with the directive by returning the items to the Office of the Secretary to the State Government.
The statement further warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would lead to the involvement of law enforcement. “The government will direct the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, to arrest Mr. Omobayo and recover all state assets still in his possession through lawful means,” it said.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and the protection of public property, stressing that no individual—regardless of position or political affiliation—would be allowed to unlawfully retain assets belonging to the people of Edo State.
Governor Okpebholo’s administration, the statement concluded, will continue to uphold integrity and discipline in public service and ensure that all officials are held to the highest standards of responsibility.
