The Delta State Government is reviewing a proposal to establish a comprehensive rail transportation network aimed at boosting connectivity and economic growth across the state.
The plan, presented by Duke Jerome-Scott, CEO of Jezreel Engineering Services Limited, outlines key routes, including Osubi-Effurun-Agbarho-Ughelli-Patani and Agbor-Umunede-Ogwashi-Uku-Asaba-Bridge Head.
It also proposes links to the federal rail line from Ujevwu to Itakpe, potentially integrating Delta into Nigeria’s broader railway infrastructure.
Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme acknowledged the economic advantages of the project but raised concerns over its high capital requirements.
He also questioned the feasibility of the proposed Sukuk financing model, citing delays in similar projects like the Benin-Auchi road.
Onyeme urged stakeholders to explore alternative funding options to ensure timely execution.
Delta’s move follows the example of states like Abia and Niger, which are also investing in rail infrastructure, inspired by Lagos’ successful Blue and Red Line transit systems.
The state’s Economic Team is set to assess the proposal’s viability, a crucial step toward enhancing regional transportation and economic development.
