The Benue State Government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ABIS Farms Marketing Nigeria Limited, a Lagos-based firm, for the construction of modern abattoirs across the state.
Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Deborah Selumun Aber, formalized the agreement at Government House, Makurdi.
He emphasized the urgent need to upgrade the state’s abattoirs to international health and safety standards, citing concerns over their current poor conditions and the risk of disease spread.
To ensure the project’s success, Governor Alia directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice and Public Order, Barrister Fidelis Mnyim, to oversee its implementation.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to innovative solutions aimed at improving public health and economic development.
Speaking at the event, the Chairman and CEO of ABIS Farms, Ambassador Emmanuel Usman, highlighted his company’s expertise in providing healthy food solutions.
He assured that the partnership would introduce state-of-the-art processing facilities equipped with automated slaughtering, packaging, and cold storage systems.
The initiative will also include essential infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, and waste management systems, ensuring sustainability.
Additionally, the project is expected to create over 1,000 direct jobs and more than 10,000 indirect employment opportunities for Benue’s youth.
The agreement marks a significant step in the state’s efforts to enhance food safety and hygiene while boosting employment opportunities in the livestock processing sector.
