The Governor of Benue State, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has issued a directive restricting activities within and around court premises across the state due to the ongoing strike by the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN), which has kept courts closed since December 6, 2024.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Governor Alia, in his capacity as the Chief Security Officer of the state, ordered all individuals and groups to stay away from court premises until further notice.
However, he granted an exception to the Local Government Election Petition Tribunals, which are currently using designated court halls for their proceedings, recognizing the time-sensitive nature of election petitions.
To ensure security, the governor announced that necessary measures have been put in place to protect members of the tribunal, petitioners, respondents, legal representatives, witnesses, and tribunal secretariat staff.
In addition, Governor Alia has banned protests, unauthorized gatherings, and commercial activities such as hawking within and around court premises, warning that violators will face legal consequences.
He reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law, assuring the public that the state government will maintain a peaceful atmosphere for the tribunal’s sittings without interference.
“Benue State has enjoyed relative peace since my assumption of office, and despite some challenges, we remain dedicated to strengthening security and ensuring a safe environment for all residents,” the governor stated.
He urged the public to remain calm and patient as the tribunal carries out its mandate, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to justice and security.
