The Bauchi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of commercial activities in several cattle markets across Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi, and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas.
Governor Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed approved the measure following rising security concerns linked to criminal activities, including cattle rustling, kidnapping for ransom, extortion, illegal arms trading, and other illicit operations.
The affected markets include Alkaleri, Mansur, Futuk, Ÿalo, Gwana, Yalon Gurza, Kuka, Rimi, Pali, Bokwas, Kwaimawa, Mai-Ari, Gajin Duguri, and Maina Ma’aji in Alkaleri LGA; Liman Katagum in Bauchi LGA; Lariski, Bara, Sharfuri (night market), Cheledi, and Boli in Kirfi LGA; and Burga, Bununu, Ball, Kulumbo, and Zwall in Tafawa Balewa LGA.
According to the government, these markets had become “tactical targets for criminals who steal livestock, terrorize traders, and disrupt food supply chains,” resulting in significant economic losses to local communities.
The suspension is temporary and will remain in effect until there is notable improvement in security. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the closure, while local government councils and traditional rulers—including Emirs, District Heads, and Village Heads—are tasked with sensitizing their communities and ensuring compliance.
Mukhtar Gidado, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor, said the government is committed to safeguarding the livelihoods of residents and restoring order in the affected areas.
