The governor of Benue state, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has condemned a deadly attack on the Saai community in Mbajir Ward, Katsina-Ala local government council, describing it as a “senseless assault on innocent citizens.”
The attack, which reportedly occurred in the early hours of July 1, left several people dead and many others injured.
Authorities said the assault was allegedly carried out by armed groups described as terrorists masquerading as herdsmen.
Governor Alia expressed concern over the incident, calling it “ugly, cowardly and unacceptable,” and linking it to attempts to disrupt farming activities and food production in the state.
“These enemies of progress have chosen to disrupt the peace and food security of our state by targeting the moment when crops are developing and the hope for a bountiful harvest is high,” the governor said.
Reassuring residents, governor Alia urged citizens not to lose hope, insisting that his administration remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
“We will not allow the forces of darkness to drive you away from your lands or dampen your spirits,” he said, adding that efforts are ongoing to build “a Benue where peace and justice prevail.”
The governor also issued immediate directives to security agencies, including the deployment of additional personnel to Saai and surrounding communities, a manhunt for the attackers, and enhanced protection for farmers to ensure uninterrupted agricultural activities.
He called on residents to remain calm but vigilant and to report suspicious movements to security authorities, stressing that government efforts would continue until peace is fully restored.
