Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced an initiative to provide free eye surgeries for 10,000 residents suffering from visual impairments, including cataracts across the state
The announcement was made during the launch of a free eye surgery program in Maiduguri, the state capital.
The initiative, as gathered by our reporter, is a collaboration between the Borno State Government and Senator Ali Ndume, who represents Borno South in the National Assembly.
Senator Ndume, WorldClass247News, learnt, contributed funds to cover the initial cost of surgeries for 500 individuals.
Governor Zulum revealed that the program, initially planned to benefit 1,000 people, was expanded after an overwhelming turnout of patients in need.
“We initially aimed to provide medical attention to over 1,000 people, focusing on cataract operations. However, the sheer number of those in need, many of whom haven’t received treatment in years due to high costs, prompted us to expand the program to cater to 10,000 individuals,” Zulum stated.
The expanded program will conduct 4,000 cataract surgeries in Maiduguri, 3,000 in Southern Borno, and another 3,000 in Northern Borno.
Additionally, the governor approved cash support of N50,000 for each patient who undergoes surgery to assist with post-operative care.
Governor Zulum applauded Senator Ndume and other stakeholders who contributed to the success of the initiative, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in improving the lives of citizens.
“On behalf of the government and people of Borno State, I extend my heartfelt appreciation to everyone involved in this initiative. Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of our people,” he said.
This large-scale intervention underscores the commitment of the Borno State Government to addressing healthcare challenges and supporting the well-being of its citizens.
