The Nigerian Army, have linked the explosion that rocked the Giwa Barracks in Maiduguri on Tuesday, to the extreme heat currently affecting Borno state.
In an official statement, the Headquarters of the Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI confirmed that the incident originated from an ammunition storage facility within the barracks.
Signed by the Acting Deputy Director Army Public Relations Headquarters Theatre Command Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Reuben Kovangiya, the high temperatures, as made known by him, triggered the detonation of some munitions.
Emergency response teams, including the Borno State Fire Service and fire units from various security agencies, he said ,swiftly brought the situation under control.
Troops from Operation HADIN KAI, as announced in the statement, have since been deployed to secure the area and ensure public safety, while also deterring any potential exploitation by criminal elements.
The army urged residents to remain calm and dismiss any rumors of a coordinated attack within the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
The military further reassures the public that there is no cause for alarm and that all necessary precautions are being taken.
