The Gombe State Disability Commission has renewed its push for inclusive education by calling on Gombe State University (GSU) to formally adopt a policy granting free education to persons with disabilities (PWDs), as guaranteed by state law.
During a courtesy visit to the Acting Vice-Chancellor of GSU, Professor Sani Ahmed Yauta, the Commission’s Chairman, Mr. Ishyaku Adamu, emphasized the need to implement Section 29(a) of the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities Law, which mandates free education at all levels for PWDs in the state.
Mr. Adamu praised the university’s ongoing efforts, including tuition waivers granted to students with disabilities over the past two years.
He also commended Professor Yauta for establishing the International Relations and Development (INTERDEV) Office, which has played a key role in supporting inclusive academic initiatives.
“Your efforts have been commendable,” said Adamu. “Now we seek to ensure they are enshrined as permanent policy, setting a precedent for other institutions across Nigeria.”
The Commission’s appeal aims to further strengthen institutional support for disability rights and ensure long-term access to education for PWDs in Gombe State.
