Original landowners in Wukari, whose land was acquired for the establishment of the Federal University Wukari in 2011, have expressed deep appreciation to Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for initiating long-overdue compensation payments.
In a statement released to journalists in Jalingo, the state capital, the beneficiaries commended Governor Kefas for fulfilling the compensation agreement that had remained unaddressed for over a decade. They described the move as a significant step toward justice and restitution.
Speaking on behalf of the affected landowners, Mr. Bawa Ba’aku Adi, Secretary of the Beneficiaries Association, confirmed that the first phase of disbursements has begun. He praised the governor’s intervention as timely and humane.
“These funds are essential for supporting our families and sustaining our farming activities, especially in these tough economic times,” Adi stated. He also urged the state government to expedite the remaining payments to ease the burden on the affected families.
The landowners acknowledged the broader economic challenges facing the state but appealed to Governor Kefas to prioritize the completion of the compensation process. They noted that full payment would bring closure to years of neglect and financial hardship.
Legal counsel to the beneficiaries, Barrister P.M. Shagnah, also commended the administration’s commitment. While noting that the agreed payment timeline has not been fully met, he highlighted the governor’s ongoing engagement with the matter as reassuring.
“Although there have been delays, the governor’s sincerity and responsiveness have restored our confidence. There is no need to return to court,” Shagnah said.
The group concluded with a renewed call for the full release of the compensation funds, expressing confidence that Governor Kefas would keep his promise and deliver justice to the Wukari landowners.
