The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has raised concerns over a planned nationwide protest by the “Take It Back Movement” scheduled for Monday, April 7, 2025—coinciding with the country’s inaugural National Police Day celebration.
In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the NPF acknowledged the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly but described the timing of the protest as “ill-timed and mischievous.”
The police believe the planned demonstrations may be intended to disrupt celebrations meant to honour the dedication and resilience of police officers.
National Police Day, newly established by the Federal Government to be marked annually on April 7, is set to be celebrated with high-profile events across the country.
The police said the day would bring together national and international dignitaries, including foreign Inspectors-General of Police and diplomats, to recognize the contributions of the NPF to national security.
“The rationale behind staging a nationwide protest on the same day is questionable and perceived to be a deliberate and unpatriotic act capable of maligning the image of the Nigeria Police and the nation as a whole,” the statement read.
The police urged the protest organizers to reconsider their plans and instead engage in constructive dialogue with appropriate government institutions.
The NPF also reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens’ rights while carrying out its duties.
