Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the brutal killing of travelers in Uromi, Esan North East Local Government Area, allegedly at the hands of a local vigilante group.
The tragic incident, which occurred on Thursday, March 27, resulted in multiple deaths and arson. Initial reports suggest that the victims, who were traveling from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, were stopped on suspicion of criminal activity before being killed.
Visiting Uromi on Friday, Governor Okpebholo expressed shock and dismay over the killings, stressing that no group has the right to take the law into their own hands. He assured the public that justice would be served.
“There is absolutely no justification for this act. Vigilante groups must work in collaboration with law enforcement agencies, not operate outside the law,” the governor stated.
He has directed the Edo State Police Command and other security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
The governor also called on the local community to cooperate with authorities in identifying the perpetrators.
Governor Okpebholo further commended local leaders, particularly the Arewa community leadership in Uromi, for their efforts in preventing further unrest.
The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the safety of all residents.
