The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has issued a stern warning to illegal oil bunkerers and petroleum marketers in Akwa Ibom State, cautioning them against engaging in sharp practices, including the sale of adulterated products.
The Uyo Zonal Director of the EFCC, Assistant Commander of the EFCC (ACE 1) Oshodi Johnson, gave the warning during a courtesy visit by representatives of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), Akwa Ibom State Coordinating Committee.
Oshodi emphasized the need for petroleum marketers to steer clear of economic crimes, warning that the EFCC would not hesitate to take action against offenders. He stressed that the commission is fully empowered to combat illegal oil bunkering and other financial crimes in the sector.
“If you’re not aiding, abetting, or conspiring with illegal bunkerers, you have nothing to worry about. Our goal is to discourage and put an end to these illegal activities because they affect the economy. These bunkerers sell illegal products to you, and it’s time we put a stop to it,” he stated.
Responding, IPMAN’s Chairman, Comrade Francis Udeyen, said the visit aimed to explore ways to sanitize the petroleum downstream sector and foster a sustainable partnership with the EFCC. He also sought clarification on the commission’s mandate, particularly its authority to test petroleum product samples.
“We need to understand the extent of the EFCC’s involvement in our line of business,” Udeyen said.
In response, Oshodi explained that testing petroleum products falls within the EFCC’s mandate to check illegal oil bunkering and ensure the integrity of the petroleum supply chain.
“Our forensic laboratory in Port Harcourt is of international standard and fully equipped to analyze petroleum products,” he assured.
He further reiterated the EFCC’s commitment to working with IPMAN to curb the adulteration of petroleum products in Akwa Ibom and across Nigeria.
