The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has commended the progress made in implementing the Supreme Court judgment affirming financial autonomy for local governments across the country.
During its expanded Executive Committee (EXCO) meeting in Abuja, Odunayo Ategbero, Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees, highlighted the significant strides made by the federal government’s implementation committee despite facing challenges.
He revealed that local governments have been directed to open accounts with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure smooth financial operations.
ALGON emphasized the necessity of full autonomy to address pressing issues such as security, healthcare, and education at the grassroots level.
With over 80% of Nigerians residing in local government areas, the association stressed that financial independence is crucial for driving social, political, and economic development.
The association also noted a positive shift in local governance, as state governors are now conducting local government elections rather than appointing candidates—a development seen as a step toward greater democratic participation.
Former ALGON National President, Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo, reaffirmed the association’s commitment to partnering with both state and federal governments to achieve meaningful development, despite financial constraints.
The meeting, as gathered by WorldClass247News,served as a platform for stakeholders to discuss strategies for strengthening local governance and ensuring that financial autonomy translates into tangible benefits for communities across Nigeria.
