Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has approved the release of N850 million to rehabilitate and upgrade boreholes in Maiduguri and neighboring communities affected by the September 10, 2024 flood disaster.
The funding, as gathered by WorldClass247News, is aimed at restoring access to potable water by procuring pumps, accessories, and other essential components needed to revive damaged water facilities across flood-impacted areas.
This was disclosed by the General Manager of the Borno State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), Dr. Mohammed Musa Aliyu, during a press briefing in Maiduguri. He revealed that suppliers have already begun delivering the required materials to kickstart the rehabilitation process.
“In response to the recent water crisis caused by the flood, His Excellency, Governor Zulum, has approved N850 million to rehabilitate and upgrade boreholes.
This intervention will significantly improve access to clean water in Maiduguri and surrounding local government areas,” Dr. Aliyu stated.
To fast-track the repair works, RUWASA has established a Rapid Response Team charged with inspecting and fixing water facilities in affected areas. The team will be deployed to Maiduguri, Jere, Dikwa, Mafa, Gamboru Ngala, and other locations, working closely with engineers from the State Ministry of Water Resources. The initial assessment is expected to be completed within two weeks.
In a further move to strengthen water supply across the state, Governor Zulum has also approved the construction of new waterworks in Zarmari, Shaukari, Gubio, Gajiganna, Gajiram, Kaleri, and Mafa.
Dr. Aliyu noted that this initiative builds on earlier successes by the current administration, which has completed water projects in Pulka, Chibok, Azare in Hawul Local Government Area, Moramti in Konduga Local Government Area, and Ngarannam in Maiduguri Metropolis.
“This effort is said to be part of a broader commitment by the Zulum administration to provide sustainable access to clean water for all communities across Borno State,” he added.
