Nigeria and Cyprus have expressed readiness to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations following the presentation of Letters of Credence by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Israel, with concurrent accreditation to Cyprus, Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, to Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides.
The ceremony took place on Friday at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus.
Ufochukwu conveyed the greetings of President Bola Tinubu to Christodoulides and pledged to work towards strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries during her diplomatic assignment.
Her accreditation formally establishes her as Nigeria’s representative to Cyprus, providing an avenue for enhanced diplomatic engagement and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
In his response, Christodoulides welcomed the Nigerian ambassador and reaffirmed his country’s commitment to deepening relations with Nigeria.
He described the relationship between the two countries as one built on shared historical experiences, common principles and longstanding ties between their peoples.
The Cypriot president also acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance in West Africa and across the African continent, particularly its contributions to regional dialogue, cooperation, integration and stability.
He assured Ufochukwu of his government’s willingness to work closely with Nigeria to strengthen cooperation in trade, investment, education and political dialogue.
Christodoulides further emphasised the need for both countries to collaborate in addressing common challenges at bilateral and multilateral levels.
The renewed diplomatic engagement is expected to create opportunities for stronger commercial relations, educational exchanges, investment and people-to-people cooperation.
Nigeria, with its large population and economy, offers opportunities for international partnerships, while Cyprus’s strategic position in the eastern Mediterranean could provide avenues for Nigerian businesses and institutions to expand their international networks.
The relationship could also facilitate academic exchanges, professional development and cooperation in addressing the interests and welfare of Nigerians living, studying or working in Cyprus.
Similarly, Cypriot businesses and investors could explore opportunities in Nigeria through partnerships and investments in areas of mutual interest.
However, translating the diplomatic assurances into tangible benefits will require sustained engagement,
structured business interactions and practical agreements between the two countries.
Ufochukwu’s concurrent accreditation to Cyprus also provides an opportunity to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement in the eastern Mediterranean, alongside her responsibilities as ambassador to Israel.
The ceremony was attended by senior Cypriot government officials and members of the Nigerian diplomatic mission.
The ambassador is expected to engage Cypriot government representatives, business leaders and members of the Nigerian community to identify areas of cooperation and strengthen existing institutional relationships.
The latest development, as observed by WorldClass247News, marks a new phase in Nigeria-Cyprus relations, with both countries expected to focus on expanding economic partnerships, promoting educational opportunities and strengthening ties between their citizens.
