Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, has ordered an immediate investigation into a tragic accident that claimed the lives of five people and injured several others during an Easter procession in Billiri Local Government Area.
The directive was issued through a press statement by the Director-General of Press Affairs, Ismaila Uba Misilli, on Monday. The governor expressed deep sorrow over the incident and vowed that those responsible would face justice.
According to eyewitness reports, the accident occurred when a trailer transporting grains from Adamawa State to Gombe suffered a brake failure and rammed into a crowd of Christian worshippers participating in the Easter celebration.
Describing the incident as “a dark and painful moment,” Governor Yahaya extended his condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for the quick recovery of the injured. He assured victims and their families of the government’s support, including access to medical care.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Gombe State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and pray for the swift and full recovery of those currently receiving treatment,” the statement read.
Governor Yahaya also urged residents to remain calm and peaceful, stressing that Gombe State is known for its unity and tolerance. “We must not let grief and anger divide us. We will rise above this tragedy with compassion and unity,” he said.
The governor further directed security agencies to maintain law and order in the area and work with community leaders to ensure peace during this challenging time.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to justice, public safety, and the preservation of Gombe’s communal harmony.
