Residents of Dukku local government council of Gombe state, staged a peaceful protest on Sunday over the worsening condition of the Gombe–Dukku–Darazo highway, a major route linking Gombe, Adamawa, and Bauchi States.
Youths and elders from Dukku and neighboring communities took to the streets to highlight the dangers posed by the road, which has become nearly impassable due to years of neglect. Deep potholes, severe erosion, and frequent accidents have made travel along the route increasingly hazardous.
Demonstrators carried placards with messages such as “We are Nigerians too!”, “The Gombe–Dukku road is killing us!”, and “We need urgent repairs, not promises!”
One of the protest leaders said the community was not making excessive demands but was urging the government to ensure safety, restore economic stability, and repair a road that serves as a vital artery for trade and transport in the North-East.
The protesters called on authorities and relevant agencies to respond promptly, stressing that rehabilitating the highway would enhance security, foster development, and strengthen unity among the affected communities.
