Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa state has extended financial relief to families and dependants of those who lost their lives during the recent Lamurde crisis, in a renewed effort to support victims and promote peace in the affected communities.
The cheques were formally presented on Monday in Lamurde to the next of kin of the deceased. The governor was represented at the event by his deputy, Kaletapwa Farauta, who led the distribution exercise on his behalf.
Each bereaved family received N5,000,000 as compensation and humanitarian support from the state government, aimed at cushioning the impact of the violent incident that disrupted lives and livelihoods in the area.
Speaking during the presentation, Farauta explained that the intervention was in fulfillment of a commitment earlier made by Governor Fintiri during a condolence visit to the troubled community.
“At the time we lost some women, the governor visited the area and made financial promises to the victims’ families, which we are presenting today,” she said.
Beyond the cash disbursement, she confirmed that the government also provided food items and other essential relief materials to assist households affected by the crisis.
The deputy governor used the occasion to renew calls for peace in Lamurde Local Government Area, warning that continued unrest would stall development and deepen hardship among residents.
“There is nothing as good as living in peace with one another. Unless we learn to live in peace, development will not prevail,” she said, adding that some displaced residents had been forced to take shelter in schools as a result of the crisis.
She urged community members to embrace dialogue, patience, and peaceful coexistence as a pathway to restoring stability in the area.
The Lamurde crisis, which forms part of wider tensions in the locality, has led to displacement of residents and disruption of economic and social activities.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mr. Safety Moses expressed gratitude to the state government, noting that the intervention would help restore hope and provide some relief following the loss of loved ones.
In addition to the N5 million compensation payments, the government distributed relief materials including maize, rice, wrappers, children’s clothing, mats, and mattresses to affected families.
