The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman over the alleged poisoning and death of her husband in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of the state.
Police said the incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shiisu Lawan Adam Anipr, the deceased reportedly consumed a meal prepared by his wife at their residence before suddenly falling ill.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment.
Following the report, detectives from the Jahun Division commenced an investigation, which led to the arrest of the wife as the prime suspect. During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She further claimed that she had sent her cousin to purchase the poison used in the act.
The suspect also reportedly told investigators that she had been forced into the marriage by her parents, a circumstance she claimed influenced her actions.
The Commissioner of Police has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a comprehensive investigation. Police authorities stated that the suspect would be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The police urged members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding, advising individuals facing marital or family challenges to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes. The Command also warned against taking the law into one’s hands, stressing that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences.
