The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major breakthrough in its fight against violent crime, arresting 50 suspects linked to terrorism, kidnapping, and armed robbery in a series of coordinated operations across the country.
At a press briefing held on April 13, 2026, at the Force Intelligence Department–Intelligence Response Team (FID-IRT) headquarters in Abuja, police authorities disclosed that the arrests were part of an intensified nationwide crackdown targeting high-profile criminal networks.
According to the police, the operations led to the recovery of a significant cache of weapons, including an anti-aircraft launcher and 17 rifles of various models. Other items recovered include 111 rounds of live ammunition, 17 cartridges, nine magazines, five walkie-talkie communication devices, three mobile phones, and a vehicle.
The Force said the operations, carried out by the FID-IRT, have disrupted several criminal syndicates between January 2026 and date, dismantling clandestine cells accused of terrorizing communities.
Among the major breakthroughs was the arrest of a 33-member gang allegedly responsible for terrorism, cattle rustling, and a violent attack on a church in Kwara State. Police also confirmed the arrest of suspects linked to the killing of three officers attached to the Donga Divisional Headquarters in Taraba State.
In the Federal Capital Territory and neighboring states, the police reported further successes against criminal groups involved in “one-chance” abductions, car theft, and the operation of illegal checkpoints. Authorities said these arrests have helped to curb criminal activities while leading to the recovery of stolen property and tools used in carrying out the crimes.
In a related development, operatives acting on intelligence arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Nasiru Ibrahim, in the Igumale area of Benue State. He was reportedly found in possession of an AK-47 rifle, a magazine, and eight rounds of live ammunition.
Investigations revealed alleged links between the suspect and a wanted bandit identified as Janari, who is believed to have supplied the weapon.
Police authorities said efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspect and dismantle the wider network.
Speaking on the development, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to strengthening national security and ensuring justice. He noted that several suspects are already being prepared for prosecution, while operations continue to track down other accomplices and recover more illegal arms.
The police reiterated their resolve to protect lives and property, emphasizing the use of both human and technological intelligence to stay ahead of criminal elements.
