In a renewed crackdown on economic sabotage, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Mining Marshals have shut down an illegal mining operation in the Damau community of Kubau Local Government Area, Kaduna State.
The operation comes on the heels of a directive from the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, who recently ordered a strategic and coordinated approach to combating insecurity, vandalism of public assets, and illicit economic activities nationwide. The goal, officials say, is to restore investor confidence and stability to Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The targeted site, rich in tin deposits and legally owned by Trobell Minerals Limited, had been overtaken by unauthorized miners for months.
Authorities reported that the illegal activities led to severe economic losses, environmental damage, and increased insecurity within the region.
In a departure from conventional tactics, the NSCDC adopted a non-kinetic approach. Through community engagement efforts, including consultations with traditional leaders and local youth, the illegal miners were persuaded to vacate the site peacefully and under official supervision.
Local stakeholders have since praised the diplomatic strategy. “The activities of illegal miners have endangered lives and livelihoods. This intervention has brought much-needed relief,” a community official stated.
At the one-year anniversary of the NSCDC Mining Marshal’s establishment, Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting the unit. Commending the marshals’ efforts, he pledged continued logistical and operational backing to bolster their impact.
Commander of the Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant Attah John Onoja, emphasized that the battle against illegal mining remains a critical national priority. “This mission is non-negotiable. We are committed to protecting Nigeria’s mineral resources,” he declared.
