The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Benue State Command, has arrested six suspects for alleged vandalism of critical national assets at Apir settlement in Guma Local Government Area of the state.
The arrests were made on December 28, 2025, following a coordinated surveillance operation carried out by NSCDC personnel in collaboration with local youths.
The operation led to the apprehension of the suspects at Apir, opposite the NNPC Depot, where they were allegedly involved in the vandalisation of Power Holding Company of Nigeria/Transmission Company of Nigeria (PHCN/TCN) cables.
Those arrested were identified as Shiaondo David Iorshenge, described as the prime suspect, Terungwa Asombo, Nomyar Bemdoo, Tyoakura Apino Christopher, Terhemba Iortuhwa Victor, and Musa Abdullahi. They are being investigated for suspected criminal conspiracy and vandalism.
The Benue State Commandant of the NSCDC, LA Bitrus, said the arrest aligns with the Corps’ renewed commitment to protecting critical national assets and infrastructure across the state.
She recalled that the command had earlier issued a stern warning to criminal elements during the Yuletide season, stressing that Benue State would not tolerate acts of vandalism.
According to the commandant, as part of proactive security measures during the festive period, 1,780 NSCDC personnel were deployed across the 23 local government areas of the state to safeguard public assets and ensure peace and security.
She commended the officers involved in the operation for their diligence and professionalism, noting that the command is strengthening collaboration with host communities to enhance surveillance and protection of government assets.
The commandant urged communities across Benue State to take ownership of public infrastructure in their areas and report suspicious activities to security agencies, warning that the protection of critical national assets remains non-negotiable.
Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects are expected to be charged to court upon completion of preliminary inquiries.
The development was confirmed in a statement signed by the Command Public Relations Officer, EA Michael, on behalf of the State Commandant.
