The President of the Christian Council of Nigeria, The Most Rev. Dr. David O. C. Onuoha, has called on Nigerians to work together to safeguard the unity and stability of the nation amid growing economic hardship and security challenges.
In a statement released today, Rev. Onuoha warned that the current tensions in the country do not bode well for anyone and urged leaders at all levels to prioritize the welfare of citizens. He stressed that governance should be focused on providing solutions that will make life more bearable rather than escalating political tensions.
“Leadership must avoid actions that promote uneasiness and confusion, no matter how politically correct they may seem,” he said. “Impunity is always a precursor to anarchy.”
He also called on judicial officers to uphold justice with fairness, ensuring their rulings do not lead to disorder but instead hold all individuals accountable, regardless of status.
Addressing lawmakers, Rev. Onuoha reminded them that they are representatives of the people and must act in the best interests of their constituents. Any action that undermines public trust, he stated, is a betrayal of the mandate given to them.
On security, he lamented the rising loss of innocent lives, including security personnel, due to the activities of criminal elements such as terrorists, bandits, and armed herdsmen. He called for urgent and united efforts to curb these threats before they destroy the fabric of the nation.
“Nigeria is big and blessed enough to make every citizen happy and comfortable. If we can genuinely love our neighbors and uphold equity and fairness, we can build a nation where no one is oppressed,” he said.
Rev. Onuoha also urged Nigerians to use the ongoing Lenten and Ramadan fasting periods to seek divine intervention and work towards peace, justice, and national unity. He concluded his statement with a biblical reference:
“Let justice roll down like waters, and righteousness like an ever-flowing stream” (Amos 5:24).
