The Lagos State Police Command has suspended an unapproved Egungun festival in Oregun and arrested twelve suspects linked to handbills and social media posts allegedly issued by a group identifying itself as the “Oje Parapo of Oregun.”
According to the police, the circulated materials warned residents and attempted to restrict the public’s freedom of movement, expression, and dignity—actions authorities described as unlawful and capable of causing panic.
Condemning the publication as an act of “lawlessness,” the Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, ordered an immediate suspension of the festival.
The command said the move was necessary to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order, breach of public peace, and threats to safety within the state.
The police stressed that no group or individual has the authority to impose movement restrictions on members of the public or take the law into their own hands.
Reaffirming its commitment to protecting the fundamental rights of all residents, the Lagos State Police Command cautioned individuals or groups planning unauthorized gatherings or activities capable of threatening public peace to desist or face the law.
