When Comfort Jimtop Oliver left for school at Taraba State University, her family and friends believed she was on the path to a bright future. Now, they are grappling with heartbreak and unanswered questions following the news of her sudden and tragic death.
Comfort, a 100-level Mass Communication student from Takum Local Government Area, was found lifeless in a residence located in the Bakasi area of Jalingo, reportedly belonging to her boyfriend. The house, situated opposite the university’s Vice-Chancellor’s gate, has since become the focus of an unfolding police investigation.
The news sent shockwaves through the university community, where Comfort was known as a soft-spoken, ambitious young woman just beginning her academic journey.
“She had dreams. She wanted to be a journalist,” one of her classmates shared, struggling to hold back tears. “We were just starting this journey together. None of us expected it to end like this.”
Authorities say the exact cause of death remains unclear. The Nigeria Police Force has launched a full investigation, and according to the Taraba State Police Public Relations Officer, James Lashen, more details will be made available as soon as the Divisional Police Officer concludes his initial findings.
“We are working closely with the university to get to the bottom of this. Every lead is being followed,” said a university staff member who confirmed the incident but requested anonymity.
At the time of filing this report, the university’s spokesperson could not be reached for an official comment. However, multiple staff members emphasized that the institution is cooperating fully with law enforcement to ensure a thorough investigation.
Within the campus, a somber mood hangs in the air. Students have gathered in small groups, some in prayer, others simply in stunned silence, as they try to come to terms with the loss of one of their own.
“We are not just mourning Comfort. We are mourning the loss of a future,” said another lecturer from the Mass Communication department. “This is a painful reminder of how fragile life is.”
As the investigation continues, Comfort’s loved ones and the wider university community are left waiting, hoping for answers and justice in the wake of a tragedy that has shaken them all.
