Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has initiated discussions with the management of the Funtua Inland Dry Port (FIDP) to enhance trade and economic activities in the state.
During a meeting at Katsina House in Abuja, Governor Radda met with Alhaji (Dr) Umaru AbdulMutallab, Chairman of FIDP, and his team to explore strategic collaboration aimed at maximizing the port’s potential for regional economic growth.
The discussions come on the heels of the arrival of FIDP’s first cargo on January 27, 2025, a milestone that has sparked excitement among stakeholders.
Governor Radda reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to supporting the full operationalization of the port.
“The State Government remains committed to providing enabling infrastructure, policies, and incentives for international business traders,” he stated.
He highlighted key areas for collaboration, including equity participation in FIDP, sensitization of the business community about the port’s activities, and facilitating national and international financial support to ensure the port’s long-term success.
The governor expressed optimism that the port would drive economic growth by boosting the state’s GDP, increasing internally generated revenue, creating employment opportunities, and strengthening regional commerce.
He further directed his team to develop concrete action plans for enhanced cooperation with FIDP.
Speaking, FIDP Chairman, Dr. Umar Mutallab, emphasized the port’s strategic importance.
“This development is set to position Katsina as a critical hub for regional commerce, reduce logistical challenges, and promote economic growth across borders,” he said.
The Funtua Inland Dry Port, conceived by the Nigerian Shippers Council in 2003, was designed to extend shipping services to inland importers and exporters while supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
It was commissioned on May 16, 2024, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
