Kebbi state governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening media practice and promoting responsible, ethical journalism as a tool for good governance.
The governor gave the assurance while speaking at the 2026 Arewa Media Summit held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.
Represented by the Kebbi State Commissioner for Information and Culture, Alhaji Yakubu Ahmed Birnin Kebbi, the governor said Kebbi State has continued to benefit from developmental projects under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, particularly in road infrastructure.
He highlighted the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway as a major federal project expected to transform economic activities in the state and across the North-West region.
He explained that the completion of the highway would enhance trade, improve regional connectivity, and stimulate economic growth across Kebbi State and neighbouring areas.
Governor Idris commended the organisers of the summit, especially the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Public Enlightenment, AbdulAziz AbdulAziz, describing the initiative as timely and essential for strengthening professionalism among journalists and social media practitioners.
He noted that continuous training and adherence to ethical standards remain crucial in addressing misinformation and improving public trust in the media.
Delivering remarks on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in national development. He said effective communication of government policies requires accurate understanding and balanced reporting by media practitioners.
The Minister urged journalists to promote unity, peace, and national cohesion through objective reportage.
In his address as chief host, the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, described the summit as a major step toward strengthening ethical journalism and combating misinformation.
He said the programme was designed to bridge the gap between government activities and public understanding, while enhancing collaboration with media bodies such as the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) and the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ).
He also noted that his administration’s inclusion of media professionals in government roles demonstrates respect for the journalism profession and commitment to effective public communication.
Earlier in his welcome address, the convener of the summit, AbdulAziz AbdulAziz, said the event, themed “Government-Citizen Accord: Accountability, Responsibility and Ethical Media Practice,” was aimed at reinforcing professionalism and ethical standards in the media space.
He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for their support toward the successful hosting of the summit.
