The Edo State Government has intensified security operations across major highways and communities following the circulation of a viral video purportedly showing a self-acclaimed bandit issuing threats near Ekpoma and surrounding areas in Edo Central Senatorial District.
According to officials, Governor Monday Okpebholo was immediately briefed on the development and subsequently convened an emergency security meeting with top law-enforcement and intelligence agencies.
The governor, who has repeatedly described security as a key priority of his administration, has in recent weeks overseen a series of strategic briefings aimed at tackling emerging threats.
The government has activated an expanded surveillance network across several critical routes, including the Benin–Auchi Expressway, Ekpoma–Uromi Road, Ehor–Iruekpen axis, Benin Bypass, Ewu–Irrua–Ubiaja route, and the Benin–Afuze–Auchi corridor.
Officials say the aim is to strengthen early detection systems, improve rapid-response capacity, and apply sustained pressure on criminal networks operating within and around the state.
In line with the governor’s directive, the Department of State Services, Nigerian Army, Nigeria Police Force, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, local vigilante groups, and the Edo State Special Security Squad have begun intensified operations. These include search-and-comb missions in forests, boundary communities, and other known hotspots, supported by coordinated patrols and enhanced intelligence gathering.
Authorities report that several arrests have already been made in connection with recent security incidents, with additional leads currently under investigation. The government emphasized that these operations will remain ongoing until all parts of the state—including rural communities, major towns, and transit corridors—are fully secured.
Residents have been urged to stay calm, maintain vigilance, and cooperate with security agencies. Officials also cautioned against spreading unverified information or panic-inducing content on social media.
Governor Okpebholo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property, insisting that criminal groups “will have no breathing space in Edo State.”
