The Edo State Government has confirmed the arrest of the founder of the Royal Life of Christ Brethren Ministry, Bishop Gideon Osagie Osazee, over allegations of prolonged sexual abuse involving two sisters who were minors when the incidents reportedly began.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Eugenia Abdallah, disclosed that the arrest followed a formal complaint by the victims, whose names were withheld to protect their identities. According to the sisters, the alleged abuse spanned several years and was perpetrated through the exploitation of trust fostered by religious and family ties.
The victims further alleged that the cleric intimidated them with oaths and threats to prevent them from reporting the abuse. They said the experience left them emotionally and psychologically distressed, adding that they eventually confided in a trusted family member whose support encouraged them to seek help and report the matter.
Mrs. Abdallah said the ministry acted swiftly upon receiving the complaint, working with security agencies and child protection partners to secure the victims’ safety, provide psychosocial support, and gather evidence. She noted that despite attempts by the suspect to evade arrest, a lawful operation after months of tracking led to his apprehension.
“The suspect has been handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution,” the commissioner said, stressing that the government would pursue the case to its logical conclusion to ensure justice for the victims.
She reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Governor Monday Okpebholo to a zero-tolerance policy on sexual and gender-based violence, particularly cases involving children and other vulnerable persons, regardless of the status or influence of the alleged perpetrators.
Mrs. Abdallah also urged victims of abuse to speak out, assuring them that Edo State has functional reporting and response mechanisms, including Sexual Assault Referral Centres where survivors can access medical care, counselling, and legal support in a safe and confidential environment. She said the arrest would serve as a deterrent to others who might abuse positions of trust and authority.
Meanwhile, the Manager of the Vivian Sexual Assault Referral Centre, Dr. Faith Edebor, said the victims were promptly received and given appropriate medical and psychological care. She disclosed that examinations and assessments conducted so far were consistent with the victims’ accounts.
Dr. Edebor added that investigations are ongoing and assured the public that relevant authorities are committed to ensuring justice through due process.
